History of The Old Rectory

Late 17th Century
Early records indicate the presence of a rectory serving the parish of Sprotborough, reflecting the importance of the church within the village community.

Early 1800s
The house is substantially rebuilt or remodelled, creating much of the structure that forms The Old Rectory today.

Mid 19th Century
Architectural alterations introduce elements of Gothic revival styling, adding character and distinction to the building’s appearance.

1923
Future Royal Air Force fighter ace Douglas Bader moves to The Old Rectory after his mother marries the local rector. Bader spends part of his youth living at the house before later becoming one of Britain’s most celebrated wartime pilots.

1940
During the Battle of Britain, Douglas Bader plays a major role as a Royal Air Force squadron leader defending Britain from German air attacks.

1956
Bader’s remarkable life story is brought to international attention through the film Reach for the Sky, cementing his legacy as one of Britain’s most inspiring wartime figures.

Late 20th Century
The Old Rectory continues its long history as a prominent residence within the village, evolving through changing ownership and use over the decades.

Present Day
A new chapter begins as The Old Rectory undergoes careful restoration aimed at preserving its historic character while bringing the building back to life for future generations.
